Is Biofloc profitable ?
  • What is the profit in Biofloc fish farming?
  • How much can I earn from one Biofloc tank ?

These are the most common questions asked by the beginners who show interest in Biofloc fish farming. Its a new concept in fisheries and not much data available for understanding the cost effectiveness or the profitability of this technique, and Indian government has not recognized it yet.

Discussing the profitability of Biofloc technology especially in Indian context, there are so many factor which can effect the profit in biofloc farming,
  • Type of fish your are planning to harvest
  • Market you have selected to sell
  • How successful you are in controlling disease and mortality
  • Your FCR ration
  • And most important of all "Growth" of fish. How fast your seed grow and put on biomass

Biofloc is simple technique but does requires some knowledge and hardwork.
hopefully as a beginner if you don't face any problem of diseases and you successfully keep the mortality under control than there's a chance you will NOT run a loss but of course the profit is totally depend on the growth you can successful produce the biomass and then the price you get from the local market for your harvest.

I took details from new former to get the answer of these common questions
Farmer who is experimenting with trapuline tank setup of
10,000 liters tank surrounded by iron mash, brought 1200 seeds , total seed survived transportation and stress 900
Total biomass harvested at the end of 5 months and 10 days 412 kg, total production sold in the local market Rs.49000 @ 120 per kg.Total profit earned in first harvest approx  Rs.15000.

Refer the attached graph for more detail.

In the below cost analysis of biofloc setup, labour charges are not included because all the work has been done by farmers themselves

Conclusion:

This is what I have understood from following the stories of new farmers on youtube.

  • The positive thing is that even the new farmer have earn something not losing his investment. But there are instances where new farmer has lost money due to disease which resulted in high mortality.
  • Biofloc farming is hard labour job. It is Not different fom RAS and fisheries in pond.
    • 24/7 monitoring
    • regular testing of water
    • and of course guarding the site is required.
  • Experience farmers has claimed to successfully produced much better harvest and earned up 35000 from 10000 liters tank.
  • Two harvests in a year is feasible according to the experts.
