Among the regular test of Biofloc water to maintain the parameters is the checking of sludge in the bottom of the tank. Sludge formation in the Biofloc tank can not be avoided completely, but it can be handled by draining it on a regular basis.
How Biofloc aeration system treats sludge?
The pump pushes the air to the tank through PVC pipe and
distributed through the air tube which is connected to the air stone at the
end. Air stones help air to be distributed through the tiny holes making
micro-bubbles in the water which help oxygen to dissolve in water evenly and
push sludge from the bottom for maintaining floc at the surface.
How to check the sludge?
Fill the cone with tank water; leave it for 5-10 minutes, let the flock settles down at the bottom. Check the color of the settle solid at
the bottom. If the settled solid are light brown of color
it is Biofloc. Sludge is black color and green is moss.
How to control sludge?
One of the ways to handle sludge is to gather it in the center of the bottom of the tank where it can be a drain easily. Water should be circulated into a round circle to prevent sludge formation and to prevent floc to settle in the bottom. (
This is the common reason most of the Biofloc fails.)
This is how you can circulate water in the Bioflock tank to prevent sludge.
Use 3 inc PVC pipe, use the angle to make it an "S" shape. Make a hole in the center of the pipe, and join the air pipe. You will see that the top end of the pipe starts pushing water on the surface and water start flowing in the circle. This will do the job by collecting the sludge in the center of the bottom, near the drainage hole, and help draining it out easily.
