Fish selection for Biofloc fish farming

Fish selection for Biofloc

What species of fish to be selected for Biofloc farming?

For the first time farmers, the focus should be on the survival of fish seed. Biofloc system is suitable for species with a tolerance of high solids concentration and poor water quality. such a situation can arise where toxicity is very high in water due to emergencies such as air pump failure, sudden change in the temperature which could increase ammonia and decrease DO in water.
Such a situation can result in mortality. That’s why it is advisable for beginners to start with air breather types of fish.

What is an air breather fish?

There are two broad classification of fish based on the breathing habit

·         1- Underwater breather
This type of fish breaths inside the water. These fish breathe through gills, it filters oxygen which is dissolved in water ( DO or Dissolve Oxygen ) for this type of fish water should contain a suitable amount of DO to survive.

·         2- Air breather
Air breather fish has developed lungs and it breaths on the surface of the water, It takes direct air above the water level.

This type of fish is suitable for the beginner, it is much easier to culture air breather as these are not much affected by the toxicity of water and does not depend on the DO to survive.  In the Biofloc environment, this kind of fish survives well in comparison to the underwater breather.

Make a note :
Learn from air breather, once you get hold of maintaining the water parameters and get well versed of growing Biofloc you can start underwater breather if that's the demand

so which fish can be cultured in Biofloc ?

Both type of fish can be done in Bioflloc either underwater breather or air breather

Air breather
Under Water breather
Cat fish
1-singhi
2-mangoor
3-pangasius
4-vitnam koi (hybrid koi)
5-pabda
6-murrel fish (not advisable for the beginner, it has a different feeding habit. it feeds on live insects and larvae)
1-Rohu
2-Katla
3-Mrigal
4-Grass carp
5-Silver carp
6-Common carp
7-Tilapia
8-Roop chanda

Before selecting species for Biofloc culture one should also consider Growth cycle

The growth rate of the fish is vital for the profit the faster fish grow the better FCR you will have and the better chances of earing a good profit.

Solow growth in Biofloc and risky to culture
